Violet Indiana - Roulette

Filed under: Alternative, Music, Pop, trip hop — josercaldera @ 6:06 am

There is this album that I really liked and I had acquired, and then lost, and then reacquired. The album is Formica Blues, the only album released (actually there were two releases of the same album) from british band Mono; thus the reason I had never heard back from them again. I traced the lead singer: Siobahn De Mare (e with tilde) to this rather obscure band called Violet Indiana. Just out of curiosity I downloaded the first song from Roulette (released in 2001): Air Kissing. Good tune, got excited and downloaded the whole album, dumb mistake! The album is just plain flat, nothing much happens anywhere, it is like listening over and over to the same song. Not quite what I was expecting, after some people (fans?) rave’d about it. There are a couple, ok maybe three, songs that worth the effort of tuning in and listening carefully.

They have a couple of more albums out: Russian Doll released in 2004, and Casino in 2002. Not sure if there are still together or not… oh, yes, I don’t really care.

damn… i found this review at pitchfork…

Casanova - Luxuria

Filed under: Comics, Fantasy, Sci Fi — josercaldera @ 6:39 am

Not sure how to start writing about this graphic novel. I’ll start by quoting Mr. Keanu Reeves “Wow”. I just recently finish the second read and I think I got it this time. The first book is what is believed a series of seven, as in the seven capital sins, and thus Luxuria (Lust) being the first one.

The main character is Casanova Quinn, a very good thief, that is a superlative of James Bond in mostly every aspect, except in the confidence when it comes to dominate a given situation, that is only just before the end. Casanova happens to be the son of Cornelius Quinn, the head of a government organization called E.M.P.I.R.E. which is pretty much the Orwellian Big Brother stereotype. Zephyr is Casanova sister and it is introduced as E.M.P.I.R.E.’s best agent.

As one can imagine there are some interesting family tensions in the plot as Casanova is breaking every rule the dad wants to impose.  This is mostly conveyed in the first couple of pages of the first issue, so I haven’t spoiled anything for you.

There are of course the bad guys. Mainly the bad guy is Xeno Newman which main power is the ability to move people in and out of time and space, in a sorta string theory thingy. There is also Seichelle industries, and its main guy Seichelle himself, who has an unique ability to construct robots, and sexy ones I may add.
Without entering in details about the plot itself let me give you a couple of things that happen in the story:

  • Casanova explodes the head of a three-women-brain-robot-combination in a staring-without-blinking contest
  • Casanova kills a version of his sister (in a timeline), whom in revenge fucks him in a yet another timeline
  • There is an island where the “air” is actually infused with an afrodisiac substance that makes everybody really horny - some form of Tijuana place where everybody is aroused, horny and ready to fuck everywhere. Oh and I forgot to mention that there are sex robots being offered for pleasure
  • A guy gets his brain blown out for disagreeing with the host in regards to the Beatles genius - ala DeNiro in the Untouchables
  • There is another island where supposedly the natives are so violent that the rest of the world has agreed to leave them alone, and yet it is learnt aferwards that the so-called natives are really a group of people that have discovered the very path to evolution and are able to move across time and space at will.
  • There is a giant robot war machine hidden in the sea, because nobody told the Chinesse that the third world war was over and they were able to go back to life
  • There is a trio of killers - much ala Charlies Angels that are super porn models

and many many more details to a quite complicated story line.

The story is from Matt Fraction and art by Gabriel Ba. The publisher is Image comics and it  came out a couple of months ago.

Here is a podcast  with Matt Fraction about the comic.

World Rock

I love to hear rock music (especially the hard variety) sung in languages I don’t really understand. I never understood what Ozzy, Dickinson, or Hetfield were gabbing about anyway. So why not enjoy the feeling of exotica listening to hard shit sung in languages all over the tower?

A relatively recent favorite such find is Noir Désir, a French rock band that’s been around for a while. I love their electronica/punk tinged hard rock sung in the loveliest of languages with hard guitar riffs. I have a couple of their albums and am trying to find more though Amazon carries only imports. I guess I’ll have to convince the wife why I have a sudden need to go to Bordeaux. Random iPod plays of their music recently have brought out interested eyebrow raising reactions from some fellow bloggers. Unfortunately, they may not be making more music for a while as their lead singer, Bertrand Cantat beat his girlfriend Marie Trintignant unconscious during an argument in a hotel room in Lithuania. She died a few days later. A Lithuanian judge sentenced Cantat to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of manslaughter. A true rock star!

I have tried to educate y’all about Mallu rock before but I should also mention some other international superstars in the genre of rock music that I really dig (all music links below courtesy of youtube.com):

  • Ciu Jian from China whom I was fortunate enough to see live (opening for Deep Purple no less!)
  • Pappo - the blues rock legend from Argentina
  • Manu Chao - the former frontman of Mano Negra and bi-lingual superstar from France and Spain
  • Charly Garcia - the Argentinian icon famous all over South America
  • Rodrigo y Gabriela - the Mexican up-and-comers who have an acoustic bend for metal
  • Beyond from Hong Kong who also have a tragic end

Life on Mars?

Filed under: Alternative, Music, Pop — josercaldera @ 6:58 am

I recently acquired Bowie’s collaboration with Arcade Fire recorded live at Fashion Rocks. It only has three songs. In this album there is a version of “Life on Mars?”, and what an odd song that is. As I was listening to it the lyrics made no sense to me. So I searched for the lyrics, only to find out that indeed they don’t make any sense. There are comparisons to as if Dali would have written the lyrics. I can see why, I mean :

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It’s the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he’ll ever know
He’s in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Sometimes it is hard to realize how much history and thoughtfulness can be behind a song that at first glance would not make you think that is the case. By doing some more digging I came across this history behind the song itself, and at least some things start making sense. I find great the parody to Frank Sinatra and my way, it does come up, even without knowing the history behind it.
making sense?… as I was reading the link above I noticed the Flaming Lips had made a cover. Nothing can prepare you for this version, if you thought the song itself was weird I invite you to hear (experience) the Flaming Lips version.

1990s - See you at the lights

Filed under: Alternative, Music, Pop, Punk — josercaldera @ 5:43 am

More pop, I guess everybody is getting ready for the summer. The turn is for 1990s, the sort of ska-punk-pop-ish from Glasgow whose new single See You at the Lights was made available today in preparation for the US album release of “Cookie” sometime in July. The tune is good and catchy, a little too much like Franz Ferdinand, Hard Fi, and the new wave of brit bands.

Of course they have a myspace page with some of their older stuff, which is a bit more punk than this new song, and pretty interesting, very raw.

“See you at the lights” is available at their myspace page and also here…

Chester French

Filed under: Music, Pop — josercaldera @ 6:44 am

Once again from Entourage… in episode 43 “Welcome to the jungle” the closing song caught my attention. The credit goes to Chester French and their only “published” song (at least the one where they sing - available in iTunes): She Loves Everybody. The song is really good. Good pop. There is little information on the band, you can find some stuff at their myspace page. They have four songs available at their page… so you be the judge. I really like “She Loves Everybody”; “Beneath the Veil” is pretty good as well, though the end is a bit self-indulgent. The other two… nothing special… just ok tunes.

Can’t share a song cuz don’t have it… but listen at their myspace page.

The Rosewood Thieves

Filed under: Alternative, Folk, Music, Rock — josercaldera @ 6:31 am

In the last episode of HBO’s Entourage the first song stuck in my head. The band is called “The Rosewood Thieves” and the song played in the episode is “Los Angeles”. The band is fairly new, having only one album From the Decker House. There is little information about these guys. The best source I found here.

The release album has only six songs, and you can here four of them at their myspace page. They are all good. I’ve just ordered the album, tell you more after I get it.

Enjoy Los Angeles…
