Girl Anachronism

Filed under: Alternative, Music, Punk — josercaldera @ 10:43 pm

You can’t miss the first 30 seconds of this song. I don’t care if you don’t like the rest but the first 30 seconds are amazing. I actually like the song, but it may have something to do about the context I listened it. The band is Dresden Dolls, which I’ve liked some of the stuff they’ve done in the past. I particularly enjoyed their version of David Bowie’s Life in Mars in the Contamination: A Tribute To David Bowie album (I actually blogged about the original song before)

I spotted the song while watching weeds episode 5 of the current season (season 3 that is). I was watching it last night and both the lyrics and the music were so dead on what was going on in the show.

They have a bunch stuff free at their website.

Fracture

Filed under: Movies, thriller — josercaldera @ 11:26 pm

Watched Fracture last nite. Hopkins is great as usual, though his character is not very different from his usual ones. Incredible smart, cinic, and just terrifying as a bad guy.

The plot is more or less that Hopkins’ character kills his wife and though he confesses to the fact, the guy plays the legal system in a way that the can get away with it. That is of course if go-get-at-it-always-win-lawyer, played by Ryan Gosling, can’t do something about it.

Though the plot is well developed and Hopkins’ scenes are good in the Hopkins’ way, you can figure out the twist about a third into the movie. We could have told it to the lawyer and save him a bunch of troubles.

The sequence where the twist is unveiled is quite good. It is perhaps the sequence in which the lawyer shines. I can’t say the same for him for the rest of the movie. There are a couple of subplots but the script doesn’t allow them to flourish.

All in all it was worth the $4…

Joe Henry - good stuff!

Filed under: Blues, Folk, Music — josercaldera @ 5:34 pm

I was listening to random stuff and this song caught my attention: Time is a Lion. The song is by Joe Henry. A bit of research showed that Joe Henry is not the new kid on the block. He’s been recording for quite a while, so my fault for not knowing about him.

Time is a Lion is part of his latest album Civillians. There is plenty to read and listen about this album in his website. On a side note who the hell chose that name for his website: “joehenrylovesyoumadly.com” … anywho… I am not so crazy about the other songs I listened to in his website. But few things worth mentioning:
- the band, especially the drummer, damn!. The bass player is awesome too.
- the lyrics
- the liner notes for the album

Speaking of liner notes… I’ve been finding so rewarding when the author writes both about the process of writing music, or a book, or a comic, and what it meant to him at that time. It gives you plenty insight to understand better what you are reading, listening or watching. I’ve noticed that it works better with small pieces like a song, a comic issue, or a video clip. I’ve to admit that only few times I’ve watched a whole movie with the commentaries on… Pink Floyd - The Wall and Fellini’s 8 1/2 (Criterion Collection) are perhaps the few exceptions that worth the time.

Oh yes… Joe Henry… anyways enjoy the song and if you want more go to his website, plenty stuff there.

The Science of Sleep

Filed under: Comedy, Foreign, Independent, Movies — josercaldera @ 9:13 pm

Michael Gondry is not your usual director. If you’ve followed some of his stuff that goes from a long list of music videos to very successful motion pictures, I am sure you’ll agree with me.

The Science of Sleep is his latest movie, released recently in DVD. Actors are Gael Garcia Bernal and french lead actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, and a realy good cast of french actors, unknown to me.

Gael Garcia Bernal plays Stephane whose character mixes dreams and reality. He falls for his neighbor and the movie is about him dealing with rejection and getting his relationship to this woman on track.

If you know a bit about Michael Gondry, then you can imagine how interesting the dream sequences ought to be, and you won’t be dissapointed. The sequences are great!. It is incredible how such a complex set up of storyline and character can make so much sense. Any description I give you about a given part won’t make sense on its own but in the context is so meaningful.

Running up that hill

Filed under: Alternative, Music — josercaldera @ 6:27 am

What a great song!…

Placebo is one of those bands that I haven’t bought anything but every time I hear a song from them I say that’s a cool song. I was watching tonite’s episode of CSI and the last song: Running up That Hill was the closing song for this episode. Great song! So I decided to finally acquire something from them. I got their Meds album, which contains Running up that hill. Can’t talk about the album yet…

It turns out that the song is originally from Kate Bush, published in 1985 in Hounds of Love album. The version is actually quite faithful to the original song, just a lot better. Thank God the background chorus from the original song were remade and with a lot of style I may add.

Los Coffee Makers - El Camino

Filed under: Music, Rock Latino, reggae, ska — josercaldera @ 6:21 am
